the birth of band camp cool

Until I went to hear Youngblood Brass Band last night at the Triple Rock in Minneapolis, the words "brass-hop" had never graced my ear. But but the time I left the gig, i was hooked. With the emergence of this new, young, amazingly genuine and energized genre of hip-hop-meets-eight-piece-horn-section, those band geeks among us who have hung on to their musical tendencies into young adulthood have been vindicated. Johnny Spit-valve from 8th grade trumpet section is now getting all the chicks.



The show was amazing, with most vocals coming from snareman David Henzie-Skogen and leaning far to the political anti-Bush. It reminded me Rage Against the Machine' Zack de la Rocha fronting a marching band rocking soulful southern jazzy harmonies with the 2 trombone/1 tenor sax/2 trumpet/1 sousaphone frontline. Worth seeing...
