Minneapolis Critical Mass 9.29

For anyone who hasn't listened to the Easy Star All-Stars' reggae album that covers Radiohead's OK Computer start to finish- put it on your "to buy" list.

Below are pics from September's critical mass ride in Minneapolis. It was raining, at times hard, but an hour into it the skies mellowed. Bicyclists were all smiles and rad styles. I hesitate to say it was an anti-fossil-fuels rally so much as a pro-bike celebration, complete with three or four tallbikes and a dude with a set of woofers strapped to the back of his ride.

The route basically entailed a cruise across downtown from Loring, northeast across the river on Hennepin, over 35W and right-ish on University to take the long jaunt past the UofM. Fratboys LOVE girls with tattoos and dreadlocks on bicycles, evidently. We wound our way southeast to Lake Street, and traveled west all the way to Calhoun Square, where the mass of over 100 people rode in a huge swarming, rotating...well...mass. It was the most visually impressive civl disobedience i've seen in a long time. (ever?) We caught Hennepin back up to downtown as the sun fell and the skyline lit up. A nice finish to the two-hour ride.

Here's a shot from Nicollet and Grant, I think. The dude with the music was playing DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince. "Parents Just Don't Understand"...i had flashbacks to the fifth grade, yo. we were also rolling along at maybe 5-8mph listening to Gorillaz. nice choice.

Above's another one on the Nicollet Mall. Below is one from near the U. Note the dad cruising with the little one on a hookup tandem! yeah family values!

Sometimes I feel a little bad about stopping crosstraffic as the group rolls through a red light, but it's quite interesting to see the motorists get to worked up. Early in the ride, around 5:30PM, this was an issue- one bicyclist got bumped by a car trying to wedge thru the riders, and another got arrested (sign of force by the authorities)...it was the only arrest. We were peaceful, laid back, and just enjoying the ride. Once we hit Lake Street around 7:00PM, people in their cars were chill- mostly smiling back, honking in support and cranking their music for us as we passed.
